Judging will be held: Saturday, September 25, 2021
Winners will be announced on Monday, September 27, 2021
Program will be held on Saturday, October 16, 2021 via Zoom
Women Veterans United Committee, Inc. (WVUCI) is proud to announce its annual Michael “Maddog” Sater Flame of Hope Contest sponsored by the Joint Veterans Committee of Maryland, NABVETS, and the Buffalo Soldiers.
What is the Michael “Maddog” Sater Flame of Hope Award?
The Flame of Hope Award is named in honor of Michael “Maddog” Sater. He served in the US Army in Vietnam where he received the Purple Heart. He was passionate about helping Veterans receive their benefits and served many Veterans in the State of Maryland and surrounding states. He stood for the advancement of Women Veterans in Veteran Service Organizations and in his last years was a member of the DAV Department of Maryland, Women Veterans Committee and a founding member of Women Veterans United Committee, Inc. In honor of his memory the Flame of Hope Award is given for positive contributions to the advancement of Women Veterans. We are reaching out to our youth to understand and recognize the importance of Women Veterans positive contributions to the military. Prizes are First, Second, Third Prize with 4 Honorable Mentions for each category.
The Contest consist of categories with prizes. A Coloring Contest of Buffalo Soldier Cathay Williams for ages pre-K through 1st grade. Cathay Williams, (September 1844 – 1893), was an American soldier who enlisted in the United States Army under the pseudonym William Cathay. She was the first African-American woman to enlist, and the only documented to serve in the United States Army posing as a man.
A poster contest with the theme of “Women Serving in the Military” ages 2nd through 5th grade. Women hold and have held many jobs in the military. From our youth, show how you see Women Serving.
And, an Essay contest “How does a Woman serving in the military affect the family?” for 6th through 8th grade. This is from the heart for no one can feel or experience what you feel regarding military in family life.
